What Are Soot Webs and What Causes Them?

3/23/2021 (Permalink)

While soot webs, or soot tags, look like smoke-covered spiderwebs, they're actually a whole new structure formed by soot and smoke particles.

As fire damage restoration specialists with over 15 years of experience, we've seen many different types of house fires in New Jersey. One of the most notable phenomena of soot and smoke damage are the distinct 'soot webs' that are left behind, which closely resemble large black cobwebs.

Here, we will review the cause of 'soot webs' or the more accurate name, 'soot tags' after a house fire.

What Are Soot Webs?

After a fire, smoke and soot particles deposit themselves around your home on walls and ceilings. In many cases, homeowners report large spider webs covered in black smoke and soot, and is what we refer to as the 'soot web' or more accurately, 'soot tag'.

What's most interesting about this phenomenon is that it's not caused by spider webs being covered with soot. When black spiderwebs suddenly show up all around your home that you keep clean and tidy after a fire - don't worry! You're not actually dealing with soot-covered cobwebs, or 'fire-spiders' as some homeowners say.

The Actual Cause of Soot Webs

When there's a fire in your home, the heat of it moves towards the cooler areas of your property as air seeks to create temperature equilibrium. This causes smoke and soot particles to be easily spread to parts of your home that were far away from the fire, even when your HVAC system is turned off.

When smoke and soot particles reach cooler areas of your home with low circulation such as basements or the corners of walls and ceilings, they become more concentrated. This is because they are no longer constantly moving.

Due to the fact that smoke and soot particles are charged from combustion, it attracts the particles to each other. When smoke and soot particles settle and come together, they create long chains of soot, technically called soot tags.

In the end, what seems like black soot and smoke depositing on a pre-existing fire web is actually a completely new structure formed only by charged soot and smoke particles.

Soot Tags Can Occur After:

  • House fires
  • Using low-grade candles that have a high rate of incomplete combustion
  • Furnace puffbacks

Can You Clean Up Soot Tags Yourself?

While it's possible to clean soot tags by yourself, like other types of fire damages, we don't recommend doing the cleanup yourself.

This is because improper cleaning of smoke and soot can actually make the damage worse. Cleaning walls or ceilings with the incorrect solutions or equipment can embed particles further into the walls, making it harder for professionals to clean. Improper cleaning can also lead to lingering, unwanted smoke odors in your home.

It's best to call a local fire and smoke damage restoration company in New Jersey to handle cleaning soot webs after a fire in your home.

What To Do In An Electrical Fire - 6 Steps

12/29/2020 (Permalink)

Prevent an electrical fire from spreading to other areas of your Flemington home by following these tips.

Did you know that electrical systems are the third leading cause of house fires? With the amount of electricity we use in our everyday life, it's easy to forget the possibility of an electrical fire in your Flemington property. Here, we will go over how to stop an electrical fire and what to do when one starts in your home.

How To Stop An Electrical Fire

Safety always comes first! You should only take these steps if the fire is small. If it is clear the fire is already spreading, you won't be able to put it out, or it is blocking a safe exit, call 911 and evacuate your home.

1.  Turn off the power

When dealing with an electrical fire, the first thing you should do is cut the power. If an electrical appliance is causing the fire, unplug it if it is safe to do so. This helps reduce the risk that the fire will grow and spread.

If you cannot unplug the source or your home's electrical system is on fire (such as wall plugs or wires) you should disconnect the electricity as soon as possible. This can be done at your main electrical panel. Turning off the power can help slow the spread of the fire and keep it contained until you put it out completely or help arrives.

2.  Use sodium bicarbonate (Baking soda)

To put out an electrical fire, you can smother it in baking soda if small enough, similar to a grease fire. It's always a good idea to keep baking soda around the house even if you don't bake in case a small fire starts.

3.  Smother the fire

You may also be able to put out a small fire by cutting off its source of oxygen, which feeds it. You can use clothing or a heavy blanket. This step may only apply for electrical appliances that are on fire, and not power sources, wires, or plugs.

4.  Use a fire extinguisher

If you have the correct type of fire extinguisher, you can use it to stop the electrical fire. Electrical fires require Class C Fire Extinguishers, so before you use yours make sure that the label includes the letter ''C'.

5.  Never put water on an electrical fire unless the power has been disconnected

If you don't have the above options to put out a small electrical fire in your home, you can use water ONLY IF you have disconnected the power. Pouring water on a plugged-in electrical fire will conduct electricity and make the problem much worse.

6.  If you're unable to put out the fire, call 911

It's possible that you won't be able to put out the small electrical fire in your home. When it is no longer clearly safe for you to be in the home, evacuate and call 911. Close the door to the room the fire is in to help contain it. Do not re-enter your home until you've been told its safe to do so.

7.  Learn to prevent electrical fires in the future

Whatever the cause of your electrical fire, be sure to throw away or replace the item. Make sure your home has a thorough inspection by an electrician to be sure there are no electrical fire hazards, especially before using your electrical system again.

Christmas Fire Safety Tips For Your Hunterdon County Home

12/15/2020 (Permalink)

While decorating for the holidays, keep these fire safety tips in mind to reduce the likelihood of a home fire.

As the holiday season is in full swing, so are holiday fires. While Christmas trees and decorations make the season bright and cheerful, they can also pose a significant fire hazard to your home when fire safety is disregarded. To help prevent winter holiday fires in your New Jersey home in 2020, we've put together a list of Christmas decoration fire safety tips.

Christmas Holiday Fire Safety Tips

Christmas Trees

On average, fire departments respond to 160 Christmas tree fires each year. Out of these fires, electrical distribution (extension cords or power strips) and lighting equipment were involved 44% of the time. About three quarters of these Christmas tree fires occurred in December or January (NFPA).

To help prevent holiday fires started by Christmas trees, follow these tips:

  • When choosing a real tree, pick one that has fresh, green needles that do not fall off when touched.
  • Make sure Christmas trees are at least three feet away from heat sources, fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents, or lights.
  • If using a real tree, make sure to water it daily to keep it moist and lower the risk of a fire.
  • Make sure the light strands on your tree are graded for indoor use.
  • If your tree lights are worn or have broken cords, purchase new ones to avoid an electrical fire.
  • Always turn off your Christmas tree lights before leaving the house or going to bed.
  • Don't leave the tree up too long after Christmas - The older and dryer it gets, the higher the risk of a fire is.

To help prevent a fire stemming from your Christmas tree, you want to make sure it stays fresh, moist and watered, far from any objects that could light it on fire.

Holiday Decorations

Holiday decorations are a larger culprit of home holiday fires, with an estimated 780 home fires beginning from decorations each year. Almost half of these fires were caused by decorations being placed too close to a heat source.

To prevent holiday fires started by Christmas decorations, follow these tips:

  • Try and purchase decorations that are labeled as flame resistant or flame retardant.
  • Use clips rather than nails to hang any holiday lights.
  • Turn off any electrical decorations before leaving home or going to bed.
  • Make sure to not use outdoor lights for inside.
  • Be sure that your fire alarms are working in case a decoration catches fire.

Holiday Candle Fires

Did you know that more than half of all home decoration fires in the month of December are started by candles? And the top days for home candle fires are Christmas Day, New Year's Day, and New Year's Eve? (FEMA) The holidays are the top times for candle use, but also the top time for candle fires.

You can help prevent holiday candle fires by following these fire safety tips:

  • Keep candles at least 12 inches away from anything that can burn.
  • Keep candles out of reach of children or animals, who can accidentally knock them over and start a fire.
  • Do not decorate your Christmas tree with candles.
  • Do not leave any candles burning unattended.
  • Consider buying some battery powered candles to help lessen the likelihood of a fire.
  • Make sure candles have sturdy candle holders so that they cannot fall over.

SERVPRO of Greater Hunterdon County hopes that all of those in New Jersey have a safe, healthy, wonderful holiday season.

Black Soot Coming From Heating Vents? Check For Puffbacks

12/2/2020 (Permalink)

Noticing black soot coming from the heating vents in your Hunterdon County home? Be sure to inspect your heating system for a puff back.

It's the time of year in New Jersey when temperatures are falling and we turn on our home heating systems. But, suddenly you're finding black soot in your house, coming from the heating vents. What's the source of this mysteriously appearing soot deposition? Your answer may lay in the heating system of your Hunterdon County home: A puff back.

What's A Puff Back?

A puff back occurs when your furnace, boiler, or water heater is not working properly and causes incomplete combustion. This then causes unburned fuel to accumulate in the combustion chamber. When this excess fuel finally ignites, it causes a misfire, or explosion in your furnace, boiler, or water heater which produces smoke and black soot particles. This smoke and soot then makes its way around your home through the heating vent system, leaving black stains across your home.

Puff backs can cause black soot to come from your heating vents and spread to nearby walls and ceilings. When unaddressed, your soot problems can even damage your furniture, curtains, bedding, cabinets, countertops, food, and more.

Signs of Puff backs

Once you notice black soot in your house, you should investigate further to determine exactly where it is coming from. When you specifically notice black soot coming from heating vents, it's most likely a sign that your home heating system is experiencing puff backs. Other signs of puff backs include:

  • Visible soot or debris on top of your boiler, furnace, or water heater.
  • Oil leaks around the oil supply line
  • Hearing bangs or 'puffs' when your heating system starts
  • Noises from heating system even after it has turned off
  • Noticing strong, strange odors in your home after the heater turns on
  • Black soot or black spots on walls, floors, or ceilings

Are Puff Backs Dangerous?

Puff backs do pose a considerable risk to you and your home, but most of the time aren't extremely dangerous. It is highly important to address puff backs once you identify them to prevent them from becoming dangerous. You should call your HVAC company to inspect your heating system immediately after identifying any of the above signs.

Puff backs carry the risk of starting a fire in your home, cause carbon monoxide leaks, and spread soot particles around your home that you shouldn't be constantly breathing in.

Are There Any Other Causes of Black Soot in Your House?

If you inspect your home heating system and find that puff backs aren't to blame for your black soot problem, there are other possible culprits. The largest culprit would be soot from candles burning in your New Jersey home.

Candles produce soot when they don't cleanly burn or completely combust. If your candles are constantly giving off smoke, are near a draft, or aren't high-quality, they can cause soot to collect on the walls, ceilings, and other surfaces of your home.

Puff back Cleanup in Hunterdon County, New Jersey

11/24/2020 (Permalink)

Here, you can see the black soot and smoke coming from an air vent after a furnace puff back in New Jersey.

When a puff back affects your New Jersey home, oily soot can cover every surface of your property. These unfortunate events require professional puff back cleaning by the soot damage restoration team at SERVPRO of Greater Hunterdon County.

What is a Puff back?

A puff back occurs when your furnace, boiler, or water heater accumulates unburned fuel in the combustion chamber. When this excess fuel finally ignites, it causes a misfire or explosion inside of your furnace. This then causes smoke and soot to enter your forced air system and spread throughout your entire home.

Puff backs can occur in both oil and gas furnaces, boilers, or water heaters, but are most common in oil-fired heating systems. This is because oil does not dissipate as easily as gas inside your combustion chamber and is thus more likely to build up. Puff backs caused by oil furnaces or boilers are also more damaging than gas furnace puff backs, simply because oil produces more soot than gas when it combusts.

Puff back Cleanup - Always Call The Professionals

After inspecting the sticky, smelly, black mess from a furnace puff back, you may turn to Google searching "How to clean soot from furnace puff back in New Jersey" - but you should stop right there! Puff back cleaning should always be handled by soot restoration professionals.

But why?

  • Improper cleaning of soot and smoke can make the problem worse
  • Scrubbing soot or smoke can embed it further into drywall or fabrics
  • Without proper materials, equipment, or cleaning efforts, unwanted odors will be left behind
  • Homeowners do not have the proper chemicals or materials to neutralize smoke and soot particles, causing them to linger and be harder to remove

After a puff back in your home, do the following:

  • File a claim with your homeowners insurance company
  • Call your HVAC technician to repair your heating system before using it again
  • Contact your local puff back cleaning service for proper soot and smoke cleanup

A professional soot cleaning company in New Jersey will take the proper steps to ensure all smoke and soot has been removed from your property.

Puff back Cleanup Process

While every soot cleanup project is unique and requires a specialized plan, SERVPRO of Greater Hunterdon County follows the same general process every time:

  1. Perform inspection and damage assessment - Our Project Managers will walk through your property and explain the clean up and deodorization process in detail.
  2. Set up equipment - SERVPRO of Greater Hunterdon County utilizes equipment like HEPA air scrubbers to filter particulates out of the air. This helps begin the odor removal process.
  3. Soot removal from all surfaces - The team at SERVPRO of Greater Hunterdon County will clean every inch of your property with specialized equipment to ensure all soot and smoke residues are removed.
  4. Restoration of fabrics - Soft goods such as furniture, clothing, or bedding may be salvageable when cleaned properly by a soot damage restoration company.
  5. Air duct cleaning - This step is important and is overlooked when homeowners perform cleanup themselves. The air ducts are what spread soot and smoke particles across your entire home and will do it again if not cleaned. This step is also hugely important for removing smoke odors.
  6. Needed restoration - Depending on the severity of your puff back, some items or areas of your home may not be able to be cleaned. Instead, these materials may have to be replaced. It is also possible that re-painting is necessary.

How Can Puff Backs Damage Your Hunterdon County Home?

Puff backs can happen as a one large explosion or in smaller misfires every time the heating system turns on. One large misfire will be readily apparent in your home - suddenly causing smoke and black soot to cover walls, floors, ceilings, and furniture in your home. Small, constant misfires may not be immediately apparent until soot accumulates enough to be visible around vents or baseboards in your home.

Regardless of the size of a puff back, they can cause damage across your entire home. Damages from furnace puff backs include:

  • A film of soot covering walls, ceilings, cabinets, floors, rugs, furniture, bedding, clothing, food, drapes, countertops, and more
  • Soot and smoke particles may force you to throw out furniture or fabrics if they cannot be restored
  • Damage to heating systems
  • Risk of fire from disconnected or damaged flue vent connector
  • Risk of carbon monoxide leak in building

An after-fire cleanup can be a large undertaking. Soot and smoke damage may cover walls, smoke odors may linger, and there may be fire extinguisher residue from putting out the fire by yourself. Portable fire extinguishers are incredibly vital in stopping the spread of a fire in it's tracks, but cleaning up after using one can be a challenge if you don't know the proper steps!

There are a few different types of fire extinguishers, but here we will focus on the most common type: Dry Chemical Fire Extinguishers.

How Do They Work?

These kinds of fire extinguishers work by interrupting the chemical reaction of the fire triangle. The fire triangle is the relationship between oxygen, heat, and fuel that produce a fire. This type of extinguisher interrupts the triangle by using a multipurpose dry chemical that creates a barrier between oxygen and the fuel element of the fire, effectively putting it out.

The chemicals most often used in these kinds of extinguishers are monoammonium phosphate and sodium or potassium bicarbonate. This is mentioned as these chemicals are corrosive to metals and can lead to damage when not cleaned up quickly (Koorsen).

Be sure that you are using the correct class of Fire Extinguisher to put out your fire. Explore the different classes and which one you should use here.

Tips to Cleaning Up Dry Chemical Fire Extinguisher Powder

  1. Wear protective equipment before cleaning. Fire extinguisher residue is usually non-toxic, but regardless, the powder may cause skin or eye irritation. It's best to wear gloves, a mask, and safety glasses to avoid inhaling particles or getting them in your eyes.
  2. If possible, shut down the ventilation system in the affected area. This helps to not re-disturb the powder that has settles on to floors, walls or furniture, and makes it easier to clean up.
  3. Sweep or vacuum up any settled residue. If any residue is stuck or left behind, make a solution of 50% isopropyl alcohol and 50% water, and spray it on to the affected area. Let the solution sit for a few minutes, wipe it with a wet cloth, and then vacuum again.
  4. Properly dispose of the fire extinguisher powder. You should put all residue from the vacuum cleaner or dustpan in to a sealed bag and dispose of it normally in a trash can. This step will help to contain the mess and be sure not to spread the residue around the building.
  5. Clean the affected areas of leftover residue with warm, soapy water and a damp cloth or sponge. This is important to make sure that any leftover residue doesn't damage any surfaces or furniture over time. Be sure to wash any curtains or other upholstered items as well.
  6. If the fire extinguisher was used in a kitchen or food area, be extra cautious with cleaning. It's highly important to be sure all the residues are gone from cooking or eating utensils, and are not on fresh foods or produce.

Once you have cleaned up from discharging your fire extinguisher - Congratulations! You've successfully put out a small house fire and avoided the need for extensive fire damage restoration. But - there is one more tip that is just as important as the rest:

Be sure to recharge or purchase a new fire extinguisher once you use yours!

You don't want to be caught without a fire extinguisher if there is a fire again in your home or business.

How to Avoid A Candle Fire in Your Home

8/5/2020 (Permalink)

Not practicing correct candle fire safety may pose a significant risk for fire damage to your Flemington area home.

Candles are often used decoratively, to enhance the ambiance of a room, or even as a light source when the power goes out. But, when candles are not used in line with proper safety guidelines, they can start a fire in your home. According to the NFPA, roughly 8,000 home candle fires are reported every year and cause $278 million in property damage.

Whether it is large or small, a fire can cause a huge amount of damage to your home. Even if a fire is put out within minutes, soot and smoke may cover your walls, furniture, and floors, creating a huge mess to clean up.

To prevent fire damage in your home and stay safe, it's best to practice these candle safety tips.

Tips to Prevent Candle Fires

  1. Keep candles at least 12 inches away from any flammable materials. 60 percent of candle fires start because the burning candle was too close to things that could burn, such as curtains, bedding, furniture, or decorations (NFPA).
  2. Avoid placing a lighted candle in an area it can easily be knocked over. Children and pets often run around homes, and if a table is bumped or a dog's tail knocks it over - it can easily start a fire. Don't place candles on coffee tables or within reach of children.
  3. Don't leave lit candles unattended. This may be the biggest tip for fire safety - Anything can happen if you leave a candle unattended. It's always possible for a candle to combust or "explode", get knocked over, or light a curtain blowing in the breeze on fire. Also, if a candle has been burning for a long time, it's possible for hot wax to splatter and cause a fire.
  4. Never fall asleep with a candle lit! Roughly one third of candle fires start in bedrooms - many due to homeowners falling asleep. This is also similar to leaving the candle unattended.
  5. If a candle fire starts - DO NOT try to put it out with water. Hot, melted wax may splatter and worsen the fire and burn you. Using water to put out a candle fire may also result in the glass candle holder exploding due to the rapid change in temperature. The best way to put out a candle fire is to snuff it out or smother it, similar to a grease fire.
  6. Place matches and lighters out of the reach of children. Children should not light candles or be around candles unattended. If they cannot light a candle, they cannot cause a fire.
  7. Throw away candles that have little to no wax back. When a candle burns this low, it heats up the container or holder that it is in much more than when it is a fresh, new candle. This puts it at risk to crack or explode, and light nearby combustible material on fire.
  8. Be mindful of the manufacturer's safety instructions on the candle. They may advise for how long the candle can be burned or if there are any other hazards associated with it.
  9. Be sure to place candles on heat or fire resistant surfaces. Some surfaces are more likely to get hot and indirectly start a fire, or are highly flammable if wax splatters.
  10. Be extra careful of candles around the holidays. December is the peak month for candle fires, and is correlated with holiday decorations. Almost three times as many fires that are started by candles on Christmas than the daily average for the rest of the year! (NFPA) With homes crowded with family, decorations, and lit candles, disaster can strike quickly if you are not vigilant and practicing the above tips.

If a candle fire starts in your home - keep your family safe and evacuate if you are not able to quickly put it out. Your belongings and home can be replaced - but lives cannot!

Fire Damage Recovery Basics in Lebanon

12/8/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO knows all the basics for your fire damage in Lebanon.

SERVPRO knows all the basics for your fire damage in Lebanon.

Nothing can prepare you for the devastation of a fire in your Lebanon home. You would expect limited charring and a smoky smell near the ignition site, especially if the fire was doused quickly. But the widespread nature of residues and odors from even a supposedly minor fire can shock the uninitiated. In broad terms, you can expect the following response from our professional mitigation and remediation experts when responding to your request for help.

Safety Considerations And Water Removal

The first phase of recovering from fire damage in Lebanon includes securing the premises and assessing the extent of the harm. Nearly every fire scene requires management of the now-contaminated water used to knock down the flames before other tasks are safe to complete. Anything from a water-slick surface to several inches of contaminated fluids creates slip and fall hazards and the risk of exposure to electrical shock, toxic substances, and hidden debris risks. Our full-spectrum disaster response capability permits our crews to complete the water containment and disposal phase safely and lawfully before transitioning to other cleanup needs.

Evaluating Residues

Depending on the fuels the fire consumed, the availability of oxygen during the burn, the types of surfaces attracting the soot, and how firefighters extinguished the blaze, fire cleanup strategies differ. SERVPRO experts run through an evaluative protocol on each job:

  • Find the residues
  • Characterize the residues
  • Consider the kind of surfaces affected
  • Capture the residues
  • Remove the residues
  • Dispose of the residues, adhering to best practices and local regulations

Choosing Appropriate Cleaning Methods

Some residues present as loose particles like ash. It is crucial to vacuum, dry sponge, or sweep up these dry residues quickly before the introduction of any wet cleaning agents. Moisture smears the dry debris, causing them to stain surfaces. Others are complex amalgams of incompletely combusted materials mixed with oil or water-based substances. These residues can adhere tightly to building materials, needing balancing of temperature, agitation, chemical actions, and dwell time to loosen and suspend in a solution for final rinsing and removal.

The highly-qualified team of managers and technicians from SERVPRO of Greater Hunterdon County are ready to clear your home of fire damage residues fast. Call (908) 788-8770 for an assessment as soon as the firefighters wind up their work.
